Ingredients

  • 4 cups peeled and sliced tart apples (such as Granny Smith), about 5 apples
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup buter, cut into cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

  2. Grease 9 inch pie plate with 1 tablespoon butter.

  3. Add prepared apples to pie plate.

  4. Sprinkle orange juice over apples.

  5. In small bowl, mix together sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg with a fork.

  6. Cut in butter, using pastry blender, fork or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  7. Sprinkle topping over apples.

  8. Place pie plate on a baking sheet and bake in preheated oven 45 minutes to 1 hour.

  9. Check at 45 minute marker: if crumb topping is not browning, add more small chunks of butter to the top and continue cooking for 10-15 minutes until top is crisp.

  10. Serve warm with ice cream.
