Makes6 hot chocolate bombs
Preparation Time30 min
Ingredients
- 1 12-ounce bag Wilton Light Cocoa Candy Melts
- Hot Chocolate Mix
- Mini marshmallows
- Sprinkles
-
To make your hot chocolate bombs, add your candy melts into a glass microwave-safe bowl and microwave at half power for 30 seconds.
-
Stir the candy melts and continue microwaving 30 seconds at a time and stirring after each time. Repeat until the chocolate is completely melted and creamy.
-
Scoop about a teaspoon of the chocolate into one of the cavities and spread it throughout the whole half-circle. Try to spread evenly so that no chocolate pools at the bottom of the cavity.
-
Add chocolate to the remaining cavities and spread the same way as the first. Then put the molds in the freezer for 2-3 minutes to set the chocolate.
-
Remove the molds from the freezer and add a second layer of the melted chocolate. This time, spread the same way but focus more on the edges so they are nice and stable when you try to put them together.
-
Put the molds back in the freezer again for another few minutes until the chocolate is set.
-
Take the remaining chocolate and add it to a piping bag for later.
-
Very carefully, push the chocolate out of each of the cavities, starting with the edges and pushing out the center of the circles last.
-
Add a heaping tablespoon of your hot chocolate mix to 6 of the half-spheres as well as about 5 mini marshmallows and some sprinkles.
-
Use the prepared piping bag to pipe some chocolate on the edge of a filled half and while it’s wet stick an unfilled half on top to close the sphere. Hold the sphere together for about 15-seconds to make sure that it shuts together tightly.
-
Place the closed hot chocolate bomb on a plate and drizzle some melted chocolate on top. Add some sprinkles and give them a little press so they stay on tight.
-
Repeat this process with the remaining hot chocolate bombs and let them set until the chocolate is hardened.
-
To use the hot chocolate bombs, place on in a mug and pour warm milk right on top of the seam. Give the hot chocolate a quick stir and watch your chocolate bomb explode!
-
Tip 1: Need help keeping your chocolate spheres steady while trying to fill them? Try turning your silicone mold upside down and placing the sphere in between the little circle hills. It’ll keep it supported without you having to hold it!
-
Tip 2: Use Frosting and Glue's homemade hot chocolate mix. I can’t tell you how much I love my homemade hot chocolate mix for these hot cocoa bombs! I’ve made them with both store-bought and homemade mix, and nothing really compares to the dreamy taste of the homemade! Plus, the recipe makes quite a bit so you can have some extra mix around for hot cocoa or my hot chocolate cookies!
-
Tip 3: If you’re planning to gift these hot cocoa bombs or store them long term, I would recommend using marshmallow bits instead of mini marshmallows. Mini marshmallows tend to get a bit stuck together after a while so the marshmallow bits work a little bit better for long-term.
-
Troubleshooting 1: The two most common reasons that hot chocolate bombs fail are using milk that is too cool or having chocolate that is too thick.
-
Troubleshooting 2: What you want to do to help your hot chocolate bomb explode properly is place the bomb seam side up and pour very hot milk right on the seam.
-
Storage Tip 1: You can store your hot chocolate bombs in an airtight container at room temperature for about 4-6 months!
-
Storage Tip 2: Grab some big jars to put them in at home, or package them in some sweet individual bags for gifting!
