I gotta say I was expecting to see a recipe for a boxed cake mix, covered in canned frosting. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that it was not. Now I'm wondering, if in a pinch could you use a boxed mix? I think I'd still have to use the homemade frosting though.

You definitely could use boxed cake mix for something like this! Just follow the directions on the back of the box but add one extra egg, and you'll get something that's more like the texture and consistency of a brownie. It might not be exactly like the from-scratch version in this recipe, but it's a great substitution in a pinch! -Toby, Editor, TheBestDessertRecipes
