Red Velvet Donuts

Red Velvet Donuts

"I’ve always been partial to a good powdered sugar donut. One bite of a powdered sugar donut takes me back to my childhood…and it also leaves me covered in powdered sugar. But, hey, that’s a small price to pay for a delicious donut, right? With Valentine’s Day approaching, I thought it might be fun to pull out that powdered sugar donut and put a red velvet spin on it. To make these Red Velvet Donuts, I started with my tried-and-true powdered sugar donut recipe. I replaced the milk with buttermilk and I added a bit of cocoa powder. Other than that, the only addition was red food coloring. I used red gel food coloring because that’s what I happened to have in the pantry. (As a bonus, gel colorings hold their color better when baked, too.) Once baked, I let those Red Velvet Donuts cool in the pan while I dumped a cup of powdered sugar into a brown paper bag. Then came the fun part! *shake* *shake* *shake* Just add one donut at a time to the bag and gently shake it until the donut is covered with powdered sugar. Tap off the excess sugar, and you’re all done. "
